For Red Velvet Waffles

  • red velvet cake mix - Now, if you have a great red velvet cake recipe you'd like to use, go for it! But I think the cake mix version is just as good as any waffles from scratch.
  • vegetable oil - I am normally a big fan of using butter in my cake recipes, but this one needs vegetable oil. This is a great ingredient to make your waffles crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
  • milk - I like to use whole milk to make my waffles nice and rich.
  • eggs - I recommend 4 eggs in this actual recipe, but it's really more about what your cake mix package says. Add 1 egg to the cake mix box's suggestion. Most of those recipes call for 3 eggs, so you should be good to go with 4!

For Cream Cheese Glaze

  • cream cheese - Once again, it's important that this is room temperature to ensure your glaze is nice and smooth.
  • milk
  • powdered sugar - Granulated sugar will make your glaze grainy, go with a fine powdered sugar for this one.

Variations & Additions

  • Use any cake mix flavor under the sun. You can make this with vanilla, chocolate, spice, or lemon cake mix with fantastic results.
  • Add any element you'd like into the waffle batter. These are great with ½ cup of mini chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, coconut flakes, or toffee bits.

🧇 How to Make Red Velvet Waffles

Step 1: Make waffle batter.

In a large bowl, whisk together cake mix, eggs, milk, and oil.

Step 2: Bake on a waffle iron.

Preheat the waffle iron of your choice. I like using a Belgian-style waffle maker, but a mini waffle maker is also great.

Add enough batter to the middle of the hot waffle iron to cover half of the surface of the iron. Close the iron and bake according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 3: Cover with cream cheese glaze.

While the waffles bake, use a hand mixer to blend milk, cream cheese, and powdered sugar in a separate bowl.

🍫 Other Great Toppings

No time to make the cream cheese glaze? No problem! These waffles are also wonderful with the following toppings:

  • Whipped cream
  • Regular syrup
  • Sprinkles
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Crumbled chocolate cereal
  • Sprinkle of powdered sugar

🥡 Leftovers & Storage

For waffles: there's no problem with storing these at room temperature. Store in a cool, dry place in an airtight container.

To reheat, toast in an air fryer or toaster oven for 2-3 minutes. You can also microwave for 30 seconds if you'd like a softer, more moist waffle. I recommend enjoying your waffles within 2-3 days of baking.

For cream cheese glaze: store in a small airtight container in the refrigerator.

Can these waffles be frozen?

Yes, they freeze wonderfully! Just store them in a gallon-sized freezer bag until you're ready to enjoy. When you're ready to enjoy, throw the frozen waffles in the air fryer or toaster oven for 3-4 minutes, until crispy.

✅ Tips & Tricks for the Perfect Waffles

  • Make sure your waffle iron is preheated before adding the waffle batter. An under-heated waffle iron will result in soggy waffles.
  • Only mix your batter until everything is well incorporated. Over-mixed batter will create tough, chewy waffles.
  • Keep your waffles extra crispy on the bottom by cooling them on a wire rack. This allows air to circulate under the waffle, letting steam escape instead of getting caught in the waffle itself (which will make it soggy).
  • This makes a great pancake batter as well! You might want to thin it with a little bit of extra milk if you're using it to make pancakes.
