I first published this post when my daughter, Emmie, was only three. That year, I was scrambling for cute tags for her preschool Halloween treat bags and just couldn't find anything I loved. So, I made my own!

Fast forward ten years, and Emmie's now thirteen (!!!). She even helped me revise this post during fall break recently - proof she's still influencing what shows up here on Lamberts Lately.

Supplies Needed

  • White cardstock (65-110 lb) - sturdier than regular paper so your tags hold up on goodie bags.
  • Color printer - an inkjet or laser both work; just be sure to set your scale to 100%.
  • Paper trimmer or scissors - trimmers give you cleaner, straighter cuts.
  • Hole punch - for threading ribbon or twine through the tags.
  • Ribbon, string, or baker's twine - ties the tags onto treat bags or gifts.
  • Optional: Sticker paper - print the tags as peel-and-stick labels instead of tie-on tags.
  • Optional: Laminator - makes tags reusable year after year.

How to Use the Halloween Tags

I purposely kept these gift tags pretty general. The fun designs in these graphics coordinate, meaning you can mix and match the gift tags you use for your Halloween celebration. All of the name sections are blank so you can fill in as needed!

Label Printing Tips

  • These free printable Halloween tags are for personal use only; no resale or commercial use is permitted.
  • When you download the printables, you'll open a pdf file in a new tab. You can either press the printer icon to send to your printer or the downward-facing arrow to download the pdf to your device.
  • I recommend printing these in color on 8.5x11" white cardstock for the best results. I also recommend cutting these out with a straight paper cutter, but scissors work just fine if you don't have one.
  • An at-home printer works just fine - this is the home inkjet printer I use!

Troubleshooting

  • Colors look dull or smear: Make sure you're printing on bright white cardstock. Let the ink dry fully before handling, and switch to a "Best" quality print setting.
  • Tags printing too small or too large: Double-check that your printer scale is set to 100% (Actual Size) instead of "Fit to Page."
  • Margins cutting off the design: Use standard 8.5x11" paper and select "Borderless" printing if your printer allows.
  • PDF won't open: Download the file to your computer and open it with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. Most browsers have a built-in reader, but Acrobat is more reliable.
  • Edges aren't straight: A simple paper trimmer makes all the difference - but sharp scissors work in a pinch.
  • Want reusable tags? Run the printed tags through a laminator before cutting. Punch your hole afterward and reuse them year after year.

FAQs

I recommend bright white cardstock, anywhere from 65 lb to 110 lb. Regular printer paper will work in a pinch, but cardstock keeps the tags sturdy and helps the colors pop.

Yes - in your printer settings, you can scale the PDF up or down. Just know that shrinking too much can make text harder to read, and enlarging may cut into margins.

Nope! Any free PDF reader (like Adobe Acrobat) will open the files. Once you get your email, just double-click to open and print.

You can use sharp scissors, but a small straight-edge paper trimmer makes it super quick and easy to cut straight lines. If you're a Cricut user, you can even upload the PDF and use the "Print Then Cut" feature for a perfect finish.
