This easy Vanilla Mug Cake is the perfect way to satisfy a sweet tooth. A single serve cake that's made in the microwave with 4 ingredients (and no egg)...ready in about 2 minutes!

If you haven't discovered the magic that is a mug cake, I've got a treat for you.
Ever have one of those times when you get a sweet tooth and there's absolutely nothing in the house to satisfy it? I think we all do. Mug cakes are the perfect dessert for those cravings.

Why You're Going To Love This Recipe
- When you want a dessert, this is just about as easy as it gets. Simply stir a few things in a mug and microwave.
- It's warm, rich, fluffy, and super comforting. This is like eating your favorite piece of vanilla cake...just without the work!
- Clean-up is even simple. You'll mix everything in the mug, so literally all you have to wash is a mug and a spoon!
What's a Mug Cake?
Microwave mug cakes are single-serve homemade treats that are so easy to make. The idea is simple: mix a tiny amount of a few of the traditional cake ingredients in a mug. Coffee cups are perfect (as long as they're microwave-safe), but a small ramekin works too.
Once the ingredients are mixed, microwave for about a minute. You're left with a single serving of warm cake. These are so perfect topped with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream!
Ingredients for Basic Vanilla Mug Cake

Guys, recipes (especially baking recipes) don't get much simpler than this.
- Yellow cake mix: Any standard boxed yellow cake mix works well for this recipe. The cake mix already contains flour, sugar, and leavening, which makes this mug cake much more reliable than a from-scratch version. Be sure to measure dry cake mix only - do not prepare the cake mix according to the box directions.
- Milk: Regular dairy milk works best, but non-dairy options like almond or oat milk can also be used with similar results. Milk adds moisture and helps the cake cook evenly in the microwave.
- Oil: A neutral oil such as vegetable, canola, or avocado oil is ideal. Oil keeps the mug cake soft and prevents it from drying out, especially when microwaved.
- Vanilla extract: Vanilla enhances the flavor of the cake mix and gives the mug cake a more homemade taste. Pure vanilla extract provides the best flavor, but imitation vanilla will work in a pinch.
Mug Cake Formula
The trick to making a mug cake is just a basic formula. Just use 6 tablespoon cake mix, 4 tablespoons milk, 2 tablespoon of oil, and vanilla for flavor. Think 6-4-2. That's the basis for a mug cake. From there, you can really add in anything you'd like!
Variations & Additions
I intentionally started this series with the most basic mug cake recipe. This is kind of the foundation for all of my mug cakes. There are a million ways to change this recipe up!
How do I make different mug cake flavors?
Using that basic mug cake recipe, you can make it just about any flavor under the sun.
- Use chocolate, strawberry, or even lemon cake mix to change the flavor up.
- Peanut Butter: add 1 tablespoon peanut butter to the mix. Once the batter is mixed, add 1 tablespoon of peanut butter in the middle of the batter for a lava cake (yum!)
- Nutella: same idea as peanut butter; 1 tablespoon added into the mix and 1 tablespoon in the middle of the batter
- Coffee: add 1 tablespoon coffee
- Pumpkin: add 2 tablespoons pureed pumpkin
You get the idea. Just add about 1 tablespoon (dry ingredients) or 2 tablespoon (wet ingredients) to the cake to make it any flavor you'd like!

Topping Ideas
Once you make the mug cake, adding toppings really amps up the richness and flavor. Some of my favorite toppers...
- Ice Cream
- Whipped Cream
- Chopped Nuts
- Sprinkles (included in today's recipe...gives it a very "birthday cake" feel)
- Frosting
- Chocolate Chips
- Fresh Berries
- Coconut
- Chocolate, Strawberry, or Caramel Syrup
You can even mix some of these toppings (like sprinkles, nuts, or chocolate chips) into the batter before microwaving.
How to Make Vanilla Mug Cake

- Add 2 tablespoon of oil and 4 tablespoon milk in a microwave-safe mug or ramekin.
- Add 6 tablespoon of dry cake mix to the mug and stir well, with a fork, until just combined. Add vanilla extract and give it one more stir.
- If you want to add anything (like sprinkles), add it before microwaving.
- Microwave for 60-75 seconds, depending on your microwave. Allow to cool for a minute or two before serving.
Leslie's Helpful Tips and Tricks
- The microwave time on this recipe might vary depending on your model. The perfect bake time for a mug cake in mine is 60 seconds. If, after 60 seconds, the center still looks wet, pop it back in for another 15 seconds. Or don't - you can serve it slightly soft in the center as long as it's been microwaved at least 45-50 seconds.
- This cake is best served immediately. It tends to get a chewy texture if left uneaten for longer than 20-30 minutes.
- If making more than one mug cake, you still need to microwave them individually. I've tried to make more than one at once, and it always throws off the microwave cooking time.
- Use a microwave-safe mug that holds at least 10-12 ounces so it has room to rise.

Vanilla Mug Cake
Ingredients
- 6 tablespoon boxed cake mix
- 4 tablespoon whole milk
- 2 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- sprinkles optional
Instructions
- In a microwave-safe mug or small ramekin, add the oil and milk.
- Add the dry cake mix and stir with a fork just until combined. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- If desired, gently fold in any add-ins (such as sprinkles or chocolate chips).
- Microwave on high for 60-75 seconds, depending on your microwave, until the center looks set.
- Let cool for 1-2 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Use a microwave-safe mug that holds at least 10-12 ounces so the cake has room to rise without overflowing.
- Measure the cake mix dry only. Do not prepare it according to the box directions.
- Microwave times vary by model. Start at 60 seconds, then add 10-15 seconds if the center still looks wet.
- Stir just until combined. Overmixing can make mug cakes dense or rubbery.
- This cake is best eaten immediately. Letting it sit too long can cause a chewy texture.

Why does the recipe call for 1/4 cup of the flour and sugar (which would be 4TBS of each) but in the directions it says to use 2TBS or each?
Sorry about that, editing mistake! I just fixed it, thanks for letting me know.
I'm confused. The recipe says "1/4 c sugar" and "1/4 c flour", but the directions list two tablespoons sugar, two tablespoons flour. Which is it? In your comments you say you edited it, but it's still there. Is it two tablespoons, or four?
Sorry about that, missed one mention on the recipe card! Both flour and sugar are 1/4 cup.
There is no leavening in this one, most mug cakes have it, like baking soda or powder. How is the texture result?
It ends up being a little denser, rather than fluffy - almost like the texture of a brownie. It's really yummy!
Im sorry if it's ny fault but mine did not rise nor cook and im very sad of this result.
very good cake. added ice cream, chocolate syrup, and a chopped-up hershey bar. tasted great. thanks for the good recipe 🙂
didn’t have regular milk so i used almond this was amazing! i didn’t use vanilla and it still tasted great! thank you for the awesome recipe
Amazing recipe. I made a frosting with powdered sugar, cocoa powder, half&half, and vanilla. This will now become a staple for when I want something sweet. ♥
It was really good but unfortunately I had no VANILLA and mine wouldn’t turn into a cake it was gooey but very good
It was so fun to make and it tasted amazing!
Wow! This recipe was so easy and absolutely amazing. Saving this recipe in my favorites folder. This definitely satisfied my sweet tooth! Thanks for sharing.
This recipe is amazing thank you soooooooo much! I am a 12 year old baker and I am so excited to try this! Also I have a question our microwave is a little weak so how long should I cook it for?
I'm so glad to see you here, Abby! If your microwave tends to be weaker, I'd try adding 5 seconds. If it's still underbaked after adding the time, try an additional 10 seconds. Best of luck to you!
Well, I followed recipe word by word but end result was.. pasty? & too gooey🤢
I really was looking forward to enjoying this treat!🙁 bumm’d
This needed leavening!
Terrible gooey mess. Followed directions exactly and I’m not a novice baker.
Thank you so much for this! Nothing suits me better than QUICK & EASY yummy things to eat. I appreciate your time & effort in creating these things. (Also the extra tips you give.) God Bless You.
Sincerely,
Lazy Woman
If I could leave zero starts ai would. I had a sweet tooth in the middle of the night. Didn't realize it didnt have any levening agent until after the first round. Thought I would be okay if I added it then, it was not. Also no salt...I knew the batter tasted weird, but in my sleep deprived state I didnt catch it
how big should my mug be?
I recommend using one that's at least 11-12 ounces.
I made it and it was very floury and left a bad taste in my mouth. I followed instruction but did not taste very good I did not use vanilla extra though so that might have been the problem
I tried this recipe and ended up having a burnt mess and almost burning down the entire kitchen. I do not recommend this at all.
this sucks mine turned out hard and i had to microwave it many more times than suggested because it was liquid on top but under was rock solid. don’t recommend.
So I tried this and mine did not taste good, and the texture was horrible. I had done a differnt mug cake recipie the day before and it was really good, but this was not. Would not recommend.
Hey—do you know if I can bake this instead??? Thx
You should be able to - I haven't tested it, but I would guess around 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes (and just keep a close eye on it).
Sorry but thid is a gooyyyyyyy mess no cake
I dont know if i did it wrong, but it bouled over and didnt taste right. two stars because it was fluffy and moist though which surprised me
Just bad
Not sure where I went wrong but it came out gooy instead of like the picture shows. Thanks for sharing but it doesn’t work for me unfortunately.
very good! ^^
yummy! will make again 🙂
Turned out gummy, dense, and tasted off.
Followed every instruction throughly and ended up with a gooey mess
It didn’t taste as good as I thought was too dry and had a little too much vanilla, and I followed the recipe to exact
