🤎 Why You'll Love This Recipe
- This mug cake is made with just 3 ingredients that you probably already have on hand!
- It's the perfect way to get that chocolate fix in under 5 minutes.
- Love a lava cake? Then you'll love this dessert. It has a great texture combo of rich chocolate cake and a warm, gooey Nutella center.
🍫 Ingredients
- 6 tablespoon chocolate cake mix - I like to keep a bag of cake mix on hand for just this reason!
- 2 tablespoon Nutella - There are really no substitutions for this; it's the foundation of the recipe! You'll use this ¼ cup for both the cake batter and the lava-esque center.
- ¼ cup milk - I'd recommend whole milk to make your cake nice and rich!
Additions & Toppings
- Feel free to mix about 2 tablespoon of add-ins in your cake batter. If you can dream it up, you can add it; a few favorites are chocolate chips, nuts, peanut butter chips, or coconut flakes for a nice texture element.
- A few of my favorite toppings for this cake...
- Vanilla ice cream
- Whipped cream
- Fresh fruit (raspberries, strawberries, or bananas are great with this cake!)
- More Nutella
- Caramel or hot fudge
- Mini chocolate chips

🥄 How to Serve & Store
SERVING: I like to let my mug cake cool for a minute or two before serving. Top with your favorite ice cream or whipped cream...you can even add a little bit of extra Nutella to the top! Enjoy it within 5-10 minutes of microwaving.
STORAGE: I don't recommend saving the leftovers from this mug cake; they tend to get kind of rubbery after 30 minutes or so, especially if you try to reheat. Just make it from scratch next time you have a craving.
✅ More Helpful Tips & Tricks
- Depending on the wattage of your microwave, you might need to adjust cooking time by up to 15 seconds. Sixty seconds is a good starting point; if it comes out too rubbery, you've probably microwaved too long. If it comes out liquid-y, it probably needs more cook time.
- If you're making multiple mug cakes, microwave them one at a time. I've tried cooking more than one together, and it always messes up the cook time.
- It's important to make sure your mug is microwave-safe before making your cake! Most mugs are, but it never hurts to check.
- Make sure your mug is big enough for the cake. You can typically expect the cake batter to double in volume, so the batter should take up no more than half the mug.

Instructions
- In a microwave-safe mug, stir together 6 tablespoons of cake mix, 1 tablespoon of Nutella, and ¼ cup milk until a smooth batter forms.
- Place the other tablespoon of Nutella in the center of the batter.
- Microwave for about 60 seconds until the top is cakey. Serve with ice cream, whipped cream, or fresh berries.
Notes
- Microwave wattage can affect cook time, so you may need to adjust by up to 15 seconds. Start with 60 seconds - if it's rubbery, it's overcooked; if it's too liquid-y, give it more time.
- If making multiple mug cakes, microwave them one at a time - trust me, cooking more than one together always throws off the timing.
- Double-check that your mug is microwave-safe (most are, but better safe than sorry!). Also, pick a mug big enough - the batter will double in volume, so it shouldn't fill more than half the mug before cooking.
