6tablespoonchocolate cake mix
2tablespoonNutella(divided)
¼cupmilk
Instructions
In a 12 oz microwave-safe mug, whisk 6 tablespoon chocolate cake mix, 1 tablespoon Nutella, and ¼ cup milk until smooth, scraping the bottom corners to remove any dry pockets.
Spoon the remaining 1 tablespoon of Nutella into the center of the batter; do not stir to ensure a gooey lava core.
Place a small microwave-safe shot glass filled with an inch of water on the turntable next to your mug to create a "steam oven" and prevent a rubbery texture.
Microwave on high for 60 seconds until the top looks set but slightly springy. If needed, add time in 5-second increments to avoid overcooking.
Let the cake rest in the microwave for 1–2 minutes to allow the crumb to finish setting and the molten center to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Mug Size: Use a 12 oz mug or larger; the batter doubles in volume and may overflow in smaller cups.
The "Water Trick": Placing a small glass of water next to the mug during cooking creates steam, ensuring a moist, fudgy cake.
Avoid Overcooking: Stop when the top is set but springy. Overcooking can lead to a rubbery texture; the cake finishes "setting" during the rest.
The 2-Minute Rest: This is really important for the cake to finish cooking and for the molten Nutella center to cool to a safe temperature.
Substitutions: Any standard chocolate cake mix works. For dietary needs, swap in gluten-free mix or use oat/almond milk as a 1:1 replacement.
Serve Immediately: Mug cakes are best enjoyed warm. Leftovers usually get a little dense/rubbery and are not recommended for reheating.
