A cookie, but made into a warm, gooey cake? Sign me up!
Look, when you're snacky (is that a word?), I know it's easy to open a pack of Oreos and go to town. But, with 2 extra minutes and a couple of ingredients you probably already have, you can make a dessert that's dialed up a few notches.
Friends - when you've got a craving, Oreo Mug Cake is where it's at.
What's so great about Oreo Mug Cake?
This recipe is a keeper for a few reasons...
- It's crazy easy! Who knew you could have cake in under 5 minutes?!
- You get the best of both worlds. Get a creamy, vanilla-like element and rich chocolate in one bite. If you love cookies and cream ice cream, this is the dessert for you! It has almost a brownie consistency, with a crunchy outside and warm, gooey inside.
- It's single-serve. No need to make a whole dessert when you have a sweet tooth.
Oreo Mug Cake Ingredients
- butter - Not margarine, butter, the real deal. It's the only thing that will give it that rich finish.
- milk - Go with whole milk in this - it makes it extra rich!
- Oreo cookies - You'll use both the chocolate outside and the cream filling.
- flour - If you're gluten-free, almond flour will also work (along with gluten-free Oreos, of course.)
- sugar - White granulated sugar is what I use, but you could also use powdered sugar for a finer finish.
Substitutions & Additions
- Use one of the many flavored Oreos instead of the traditional chocolate cookies. This is so good with the strawberry, toffee, or even birthday cake Oreos.
- Want your mug cake to have an extra gooey texture? Omit the flour (trust me, it works!).
- If you want to reduce the sugar content a little, substitute stevia for the granulated sugar.

Step-by-Step Directions
- In a microwave-safe mug, combine melted butter and milk.
- Add one Oreo cookie. Crush into milk/butter with a fork, until combined and stir-able.
- Add flour and sugar and stir lightly until mixed.
- Gently press the remaining Oreo cookie into the center of the batter, until just covered.
- Microwave for 60 seconds.
How to Serve Oreo Mug Cake
I like to serve my Oreo mug cake topped with either a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a big dollop of cool whipped cream. Add a few crumbles of an extra Oreo for a little bit of a crunch.
You can also get creative with your toppers - fresh fruit (strawberries or raspberries), nuts, or a little bit of chocolate syrup would also be yummy!
No matter what - serve it warm. I don't recommend waiting more than 10-15 minutes to eat this after cooking. It tends to get a little rubbery and just isn't as good once it cools to room temperature.
More Useful Tips and Tricks
- Small adjustments in cooking time can change the texture of your mug cake. With my 1100-watt microwave, 60 seconds is just about perfect. Take 10 seconds off to have a gooey, lava-style brownie cake. Add 10 seconds for a more solid, "cakey" cake.
- If you have a turntable-style microwave, place the mug on the outside of the turntable to cook it. Strangely, this keeps the heat in the mug more even, resulting in a perfectly cooked mug cake.
- Make the Oreos even easier to mix by pulsing the cookie in the food processor or blender before mixing into the butter & milk.
- For easy clean-up, give your mug a light coat of cooking spray before making the cake.
