Making a Superstar

It's really not every day that you get to see a superstar being made.

Do you remember the first time you watched Carrie Underwood?  Or Kelly Clarkson?  It is so cool that we were really all able to know all of these now-famous musicians before they were famous - all because of American Idol.  Their 14th season premiered on January 7th - and is already off to a fantastic start. (I mean, have you seen the viral video of the little girl that sang "Let It Go" to Jennifer Lopez? Precious.)

I'm an Alabama girl, so naturally, we've always rooted for the hometown contestant.  We've been lucky enough to have three American Idols from Alabama - Bo Bice, Taylor Hicks, and Ruben Studdard - make it to the Top 10.  Bo Bice made a great run, but was ultimately edged out by this little singer from Oklahoma - I'm sure you haven't heard of her since - Carrie Underwood.

I just remember the overwhelming sense of pride we had when "our contestants" won.  It's well-noted that Alabama folks get a little competitive about, oh well...everything.  But this was more than a competitive streak - this was such pride knowing that one of our guys was representing something that has become so very American.  It feels like American Idol is more than a singing competition now - it's an absolute institution in this country.

With its help, talented singers from the show have sold over 60 million records and garnered more than 250 million music downloads. It has helped over 70 singers make it on to the Billboard charts...not to mention the countless awards its singers have won.  It is truly the gold standard for television singing competitions!

Tonight, an-all new audition episode is airing from Kansas City!  Many of the contestants you'll see tonight were found through the American Idol Bus Tour.  You'll get a chance to hear Keith Urban sing back-up for a contestant, watch Harry Connick, Jr. test the note range of a contestant, and see a father hear his daughter sing for the very first time with the help of new hearing aids.  It should be a great show!  You can also catch Adam Lambert guest judging in New York City tomorrow night, 1/15.

You can catch American Idol on Wednesdays and Thursdays 8/7C on FOX!
