Couponing 101

**Hi Kelly's Korner readers!  Here is a post I did a few months ago about couponing...it's something I've been doing for about 3 years now and I love it! :) You can also see this post for a few other fun ways to save money!***

By popular demand, here is how I grocery shop. :)
This is a re-post that I've just updated from a few months ago, so if you've seen it before, you know why!  My process has changed a little in the past few months though, so I updated where needed.

(By the way, I updated for those who don't have Publix - see bottom of post!)
Here's my general process each week:
Monday:  Grocery list is published on iheartpublix.com.  I usually just kind of glance through it, print out the coupons that look like good deals (or that might run out soon), but don't make too much of a list yet.

Tuesday:  The Super Deals come out on iheartpublix.  This is the point I really make my list!  I usually buy anything that's more than 90% off and/or under a quarter (you never know when you can use/donate some things!).  I also look through the regular ad for things I might need or definitely use.

Wedneday: Grocery shopping day!  This used to be on Sunday, but they changed the penny item day.  I'll admit, it is a little inconvenient to shop on a work day, but something for (almost) free is definitely worth it!  I usually always put my grocery list on the blog on Wednesdays - partly because people are interested, partly because I like to sit there and break everything down!

Saturday (usually):  The drug store ads come out on southernsavers.com.  I am open to going to any of the local drug stores, but Rite-Aid has been KILLING it lately with good deals!  With the drug stores, I only buy the free/monkeymaker items (unless I see something we need in the ad).  The past few weeks I have MADE money!  Southern Savers posts a scenario at the bottom of each drug store list to show you how to shop there...those are really helpful!

Sunday:  I go to the drug stores as early as possible, because the good deals sell out quickly.
I usually go back and look at the deals that have been posted since the Publix ad started (there are always a few unadvertised deals and a few coupon combos people have found).  These are posted on iheartpublix.com...I use southernsavers.com too!  If I can wait until the next shopping day, I do, but I usually make a small run on the weekend for a few really good deals!  I also buy my newspapers there too on Sunday (cheaper than gas stations!)

Here are a few extra tips for grocery shopping:

-Go in with a list.  Don't try to just shop for whatever - you WILL waste money!

-Organize your coupons, from one side of the store to another (I usually go from right to left).  That way, you aren't digging through trying to organize in the store!

-Don't buy it if you can't use/donate it.  Even if you buy it for 5 cents, that's a wasted 5 cents if you don't put it to use!  Anytime I see a good deal on toiletries, I stock up as much as possible.  Some things do expire (toothpaste off the top of my head, I'm sure there are others), but even if they do they have a LONG shelf life!

-Write down the price after coupons on your grocery list.  That will give you a pretty good idea of how much you're going to spend.
For example, Totino's pizza rolls were on sale this week.  They are normally $3.99, but were B1G1 and I had $1/2 coupons.  I was buying 8 bags of those (yes, we will eat them...it might take a year, but we will).  So, since they were $1.50 each, I wrote ($12) next to Totino's on my list.  That way, when the whole list is done,  I can go back and get a good idea of how much I'm going to spend!

-Organize your coupons.  The only coupons I actually buy are in the newspaper each week (I get 2 newspapers on Sundays - 1 Tuscaloosa News, 1 Birmingham News).  I take the inserts out (they vary each week, but usually a RedPlum and a SmartSource), write the date on the front of each booklet, and paper clip the ones from that day together.  They are all in order in a binder I have.  I also save the Publix flyers at the front of the store, and any random ones I find.  I Heart Publix has all of this on their site, including a link to any internet printables you can use!

I've discovered recently that a lot of people do coupon exchanges online.  These are AWESOME if there's a staple item on sale that you don't have a coupon for!  You can also pay for someone to send you a coupon (note:  It is illegal to actually sell coupons, but you can pay someone for their time/postage).  I've used http://couponbeat.ecrater.com/ before - and I'm sure there are a bunch more!

-A lot of people have asked how I make menus with the stockpiling method of grocery shopping (buying when it's on sale, instead of when you need it).  I usually wait until after Wednesday to make my menu for the next week.  I go through what I have and see what works.  The ingredients tab of allrecipes.com will let you put in your ingredients and show you what recipe will work with them.  It's great!
-Make room in the budget for meat/produce.  This is one that gets a lot of couponers.  Yes, we could probably live off of $10 a week, but I would be buying processed, dried, preserved food all of the time.  I'm not saying there's anything necessarily wrong with eating that stuff - I usually have some of it on the list every week.  However, you have to learn moderation.  I have a budget of $25 a week, and if I'm under that, I fill the rest of the budget with fresh produce.  Publix (and most other stores) actually has pretty good deals on fruits every week.  I like Winn-Dixie for my meats (they usually run the best sales!).  For meat - STOCK up when you see a sale.  I usually buy 8-10 pounds of a meat when it gets to the right price (I very rarely pay over $2/lb. for meat), and freeze it.
Also, I use a lot of frozen veggies.  I've heard from so many places that you don't lose a ton of nutrients in the freezing process.  While it is better to eat fresh, frozen isn't that bad!  And you'll find a ton of good sales on frozen produce.

Dairy is another item that most people don't know you can freeze!  Last week, I bought 8 half gallons of milk.  Well OBVIOUSLY we're not going to drink that before it's expired, so I froze most of it.  When you need a new one, just pull it out of the freezer!  Cheese freezes really well, and yogurt does too.  I'm sure there are others!

IF YOU DON'T HAVE PUBLIX:  It might not be as easy, but you can still follow this general process!  Southernsavers.com has a lot more grocery stores than just Publix, so you can make your list there.  Publix has the best deals I've found, but there's a lot of other good deals out there too!  I've always been jealous of those who have Kroger - they are really good.  Food Lion (which I don't have either) has really good internet coupons!  Check out that website above - they have most of the grocery stores in the Southeast I know, probably some out of this region too!

I think I could write a book about this, so if you have any questions, put them in the comments and I'll try to answer!

Groceries - July 27th and 28th

So, obviously a big week.  I am definitely in stockpiling mode, because I know very soon I'm not going to have time to organize all of this.  Plus, this is the last week I can use those glorious $5/25 Rite-Aid coupons, so I am taking complete advantage of that too!

Needless to say, I was WAY over budget this week.  It was worth it though!  I'm going to try to go back to $10 weeks for awhile starting next week to make up for it.

I had 1 trip to Rite-Aid, where I bought a Reach Toothbrush, a tube of Crest toothpaste, and 2 bottles of Nivea Men's body wash.  I spent $6.96 out of pocket, got $6 I can use towards my next trip, and a $2.99 rebate.  That's $2.03 profit!!

I had three trips to Publix this week.  I tried to kind of even out the trips to around $25 each so I could use one of the Rite Aid coupons each time.  Here's how it broke down!

Trip 1 (Tuesday)

2 loaves Cole's Garlic Bread - Normally $1.79 each, had a B1G1 free coupon and a 50 cents/1 coupon (which doubled) - 79 cents for both loaves

2 Stouffer's Family Sized Entrees - Normally $6.99 each, on sale for $3.99, had 2 $2/1 coupons - $3.98 total

1 Olay Total Effects Body Wash and 1 Ivory Body Wash - Normally $5.99 and $3.99 each (respectively), Olay was on sale for $5.49, had a $4/1 Olay coupon and a free Ivory when you buy Olay - $1.49 total for both

Frank's Red Hot Sauce - Normally $1.09, had a 50 cents/1 coupon (which doubled) - 9 cents total

4 Right Guard Deodorants - Normally $2.79, on sale for B1G1 free, had 2 B1G1 free coupons and 1 $2/2 coupon - 79 cents total

Then, used a $5/25 coupon.

Trip 2 (Wednesday)

4 Mangoes - Normally $1 each, on sale for B1G1 free - $2 total

1 5lb. Bag Potatoes - Normally $3.99, on sale for $2.99

4 boxes Nature Valley Granola/Nut Bars - Normally $5.49 each, on sale for B1G1 free, had 2 75 cents/2 coupons - $9.50 total

4 Bags Totino's Pizza Rolls - Normally $3.99 each, on sale for B1G1 free, had 2 50 cents/2 coupons (which doubled) - $6 total

4 Bottles V8 Splash - Normally $2.99,  on sale for B1G1 free, had 2 $1/2 coupons - $4 total

6 Pack Publix Spring Water - Normally $2.00, penny item this week

Then, used a $5/25 coupon.

Trip 3 (Wednesday)

4 Packs Yoplait GoGurt - Normally $2.69 each, on sale for B1G1 free, had 2 $1/1 coupons and 2 85 cents/2 coupons - $1.68 total

1 Carton Mayfield Ice Cream - Normally $5.49, on sale for B1G1 free - $2.75 (And I have a try me free rebate, so this will end up being free!)

4 Pints Starbucks Ice Cream - Normally $3.79, on sale for B1G1 free, had 4 $1/1 coupons - $3.58 total

6 Pack of Publix Spring Water - Normally $2.00, penny item this week

4 Bags Totino's Pizza Rolls - Normally $3.99 each, on sale for B1G1 free, had 2 50 cents/2 coupons (which doubled) - $6 total

McCormick Crushed Rosemary - $3.49

4 Tony's Pizzas - Normally $1.66, on sale for $1 each, had 2 $1/2 coupons - $2 total

2 Bottles Softsoap - Normally $1.27, on sale for $1 each, had 2 50 cents/1 coupons (which double) - FREE soap!

2 Bottles Palmolive Soap - Normally $3.19 each, on sale for B1G1 free, had 2 25 cents/1 coupons (which doubled) - $2.19 total

Then, used a $5/25 coupon.

SO...for all 4 trips, I spent $45.22 pre-tax (less rewards and rebates, it's at $33.48).  I got $168.85 worth of products all said and told, so that's a 80% savings!  Like I said, it was a REALLY good week!

New Orleans Weekend

Noah had a really great week at work last week, so to celebrate, we went to New Orleans for the weekend!  I'm so glad we got to go...I start back to school next Thursday, so this was probably the last time we will get to go on one of these weekend trips for awhile.  We had so much fun!

I wasn't a great picture-taker this weekend...mostly just took pictures of food and Hardy!  Haha!

Little man got to go stay with the grandparents in Hattiesburg.  He is always so excited to go...and always comes back and sleeps for a week!  He's asleep right now as a matter of fact.

We always laugh because he REFUSES to go to sleep in the car.  He will fight it like a little kid.  I guess he's afraid he's going to miss something!

These are all of his attempts to fight it.  His eyes would close for about 10 seconds before he perked back up.  He's so funny!

We dropped Hardy off and stayed there Friday night, and headed to New Orleans Saturday.  We ate sushi for lunch Saturday!

We kind of just laid around Saturday afternoon at the hotel.  We stayed at the Double Tree...umm had NEVER heard of the cookies they hand out when you check in, but I was instantly a fan.  Those things were AWESOME!

Here's our room!  We were kind of boring...we spent most of our time sleeping/laying around.

And THAT would be our dinner Saturday night...we stuffed our faces.  Can you tell we're awfully concerned about food? :)

Sunday we got back to Hattiesburg early to eat and spend time with Noah's family.  This guy was happy to see us!

It was SO nice to get out of town before all jof the busyness starts!

Show Us Your Life - Grilling Recipes

Doesn't everything just taste better when it's cooked on a grill?

We've got a few favorite grilling recipes.  Unfortunately, our grill has been broken since the beginning of summer...boo.  So the George Foreman grill has had to do lately! :)

Here's one of Noah's favorites...it's easy and turns out great!  Take a big sheet of aluminum foil and rub it with a stick of butter until there's a good coat on the bottom.  Layer zucchini, squash, and onions.  Lay a few fish fillets on top of that.  Then, squirt a lemon on that, add another layer of zucchini, squash, and onions, and pour melted butter on the top.  Add another layer of aluminum foil (kind of like a sandwich).  Put all of that on the grill until the veggies are tender and the fish is cooked through.  VERY good...and not too bad for you!

Our favorite steak marinade is simple too...mix equal parts Tony Chachere's and olive oil in a big gallon sized bag.  Add your steaks for about 30 minutes.  They'll be a little spicy, but they have an awesome flavor!  We got this from an idea Emeril Lagasse had, and just adapted it to our own idea!

The picture above is one night when we grilled asparagus too...AWESOME if you do it right!  I marinate mine in 1/2c Italian Dressing and 1/2c Worcestershire Sauce for 2 hours before.  We got one of those awesome grill pans with the holes in the bottom for Christmas last year, so we use that!  It gives it a really good flavor.  Leave it on the grill for 5-10 minutes, until you can hold it up and it starts looking a little bend-y (don't you love my scientific explanations?).

Enjoy! :)

Things I'm Loving Right Now...

-Spending time with my Hardy puppy.  I forget sometimes he really is the sweetest thing in the world (despite his temper tantrum while getting my oil changed yesterday...).  This is a video I made this morning...this is what he does when we try to give him a treat.  I was trying to get him on video trying to bury it with his nose (like the carpet was dirt or something), but he wouldn't cooperate.  Still cute though!

-Hanging out at home today.  I'm a total homebody, so I'm loving just enjoying my home right now.  It's so peaceful, and without anybody here, I can get so much done!

-The fact that this is waiting for me for lunch.
-Circle E Candles...my FAV.  They make your house smell like heaven - seriously.

I'm not too wild about the 40oz ones...they burn funny.  It like burns down the middle and leaves a lot of wax on the sides, then puts the candle out when it melts the side wax later (if that makes any sense at all).  I'll stick to the 28 oz ones next time, and to Country Morning...the BEST.  But these are so nice for now.  My house smells awesome!

-Playlist.com and Pandora, particularly the fact that they offer any Christmas music you could ever want.  My friend Ashley just did her Christmas in July post, and it launched me into Christmas mode big-time!

I am loving life right now!

Cleaning Out My Fridge...

So I've been on a produce buying kick lately, and when I cleaned out my fridge yesterday, I realized I had a TON of it that was about to expire.  Cheap me wasn't about to let that happen, so I made something that turned out really good!

I've always liked mixing salsa and sour cream together for a dip, so I kind of went off of that.  First, I chopped up half a red onion into really small pieces...

...and added in 2 small tomatoes, again chopped into really small pieces.  Get all of the guts out of the tomato first, or it will be too watery.

Then I took probably 1/4 cup of cilantro, and chopped it.

Get that all in a small bowl...

...and add a teaspoon of pepper, a tablespoon of hot sauce, a tablespoon of lime juice, a dash of salt, and red bell pepper flakes to taste (more or less depending on how spicy you want it).  I also put in probably 2 tablespoons of olive oil.

Mix that all up, and it would probably be a really good salsa all on it's own!

BUT, I had some sour cream that was about to expire too, so I put that in (about a cup).

It would be an awesome dip for a cookout!  We ate the whole bowl in about an hour. :)

PS - Just started a sale on my design blog - check it out!

Rehearsing

I friend of mine that I worked with asked me to take pictures of her wedding rehearsal last night.  To be honest, I was a little intimidated, but they (most of the pictures at least) turned out really cute!  Here's a few of them...

Congratulations Deanna!

Birthday and Recipes

My 25th birthday was yesterday!  I had a really great day.  Noah came home early to spend time with me, and we vegged all afternoon.  We also went to my favorite local Mexican restaurant with my family last night.  Just an awesome, awesome day!

I didn't take many pictures, but I had to get one of my birthday card from Noah and Hardy...

How perfect are they??

For my birthday, I decided I'd try a few new recipes.  We've had a bunch of frozen seafood in our deep freeze for awhile now, and I've been meaning to use it up.  I'm a Food Network ADDICT, and they've been showing a bunch of great ways to use seafood lately.  I tried a couple!

The first one I did was a scallop slider burger that Paula Deen did.  You can find the recipe here.  They were good - just make sure you like seafood before eating!

I also made the cilantro mayo that goes with them.  Also VERY good!  If you like the salsa at Mexican restaurants, you'll like this.

I also made Roasted Shrimp Salad by Ina Garten.  I've never really cooked any of her stuff before, so I was interested to see how it turned out.  It was different - not in a bad way, just different than anything I've tried before.

Very easy to make though!  You just clean shrimp, throw it on a pan, and roast for about 10 minutes.  Then, mix the sauce together...

...and toss those together.

I made the mistake of putting the shrimp into the sauce, and the salad was way too mayo-ey.  Mix in a little bit of the sauce at a time, and add as needed!

We made pita sandwiches out of this, with a little bit of lettuce and tomato.  Delish!
